Why Your Car Makes Strange Noises in Cold Weather: Nissan Technician Breakdown
Indiana winters bring freezing temperatures that cause vehicles to behave differently than they do in warmer months. Many Nissan owners notice new or unusual sounds when starting their vehicle, turning the wheel, accelerating, or driving at low speeds. These noises are often normal, but some can signal the need for diagnostics.
Here’s a breakdown of the most common winter noises and what they mean, straight from DeFOUW Nissan’s certified technicians.
1. Squealing or Chirping at Startup
Cold weather thickens engine fluids and can cause belts to slip briefly when the engine first starts.
Common Causes
- Worn or loose serpentine belt
- Cold, thick engine oil causing resistance
- Dampness or frost on pulleys
If the noise lasts more than a few seconds, schedule a diagnostic check.
2. Grinding or Groaning When Turning
Power steering components contract in freezing temperatures, especially if fluid levels are low or the fluid is old.
Possible Reasons
- Low power steering fluid
- Cold, thickened steering fluid
- Worn steering pump or bearings
This noise often appears in the morning and fades as the car warms up.
3. Loud Exhaust or Rattling on Startup
Metal contracts in cold air, causing small exhaust gaps or loose heat shields to vibrate loudly when the engine is cold.
Why It Happens
- Loose exhaust clamps or brackets
- Minor gaps that seal once warm
- Heat shield vibration
While often harmless, exhaust leaks should be diagnosed quickly for safety.
4. Brake Squeaking or Grinding
Cold temperatures create light rust on brake rotors overnight. The first few stops scrape off this surface rust, causing a temporary squeak.
When to Be Concerned
- If grinding lasts more than a minute
- If vibration occurs when braking
- If the noise returns every cold morning
5. Suspension Creaking or Popping
Cold weather stiffens rubber bushings, ball joints, and control arm components. This produces creaking or popping noises when the suspension flexes.
Common Winter Triggers
- Turning into driveways
- Driving over speed bumps
- Turning the wheel sharply
Persistent popping is a sign to schedule a professional inspection.
6. Tire Noise on Cold Pavement
Tires harden in cold weather, losing grip and producing humming or thumping noises until they warm up.
What Helps
- Proper tire pressure
- Regular tire rotations
- Winter-rated tires
When Winter Noises Mean It’s Time for Diagnostics

I have two nissan sentras and both of them make noise from dashboard ONLY IN WINTER, the noise are not from engine, tires, brakes or any pipes, noises coming from dashboard and feel like some lose in there
Thanks for sharing your experience. Cold winter temperatures can cause interior materials like plastic panels, clips, and fasteners in the dashboard to contract, which may lead to rattling or creaking noises. Because dashboard noises can have several causes and are difficult to pinpoint without inspection, the best next step is to have a trained technician take a look.
